Posts: 11966 November 3, 2009 04:56 PM I need to get organizized. They Killed Radio Raheem!	I saw Night of the Living Dead around Halloween. It was pretty decent--put me in the mood to watch some more horror movies, which I ended up not doing. Also, I've had very few nightmares in my life. Though strangely enough, I did recently have two pretty intense dreams, and I ended up dying in both of 'em. I was driving around and was struck by lightning in one (there was such an intense pain/ringing in my head in the dream that it woke me up) and in the other the city was being firebombed. Intense stuff. Though I didn't really freak out, I just thought "I guess it's untrue that if you die in your dreams you die in real life." Unless I'm already dead and this is some kinda lame afterlife...

I'll watch Drag Me To Hell soon, it was just disappointing I didn't see it that day. But yeah if I'd thought ahead I'd have downloaded it and burned it to DVD to watch. EDIT: Did you watch the original Night of the Living Dead or the color remake they made some time later, Mav? (The only difference was a slightly different ending which changed some important themes I felt). I've probably had some scary dreams but the weirdest dream I had was just sort of eerie. I and everyone else woke up in the middle of the night and it was almost like daylight outside. When we all went out the sky was full of exploding supernovas, like all the stars in the universe had exploded at once and there were like big balls of light that looked huge all over the sky. It was just an intense dream, not particularly scary, just weird as heck and feeling very real. -------------------------------------------------------------- Emily, a crowd has gathered here And once again they fail to see. Posts: 531 November 4, 2009 03:28 AM Level ∞ Socialist Dictator Better than your God	I used to have this recurring dream in the first house i lived in (moved out when i was just over 4) I had the dream probably over a dozen times when i lived there, and twice in different houses, yet it was the same dream. Basically, i went downstairs in the middle of the night to play with lego (or duplo or whatever) and the walls stat melting and i can't escape. People have suggested maybe i watched too much aladdin, but i'm pretty sure the dreams predate it. Other nightmares have always been about losing something or someone. The worst nightmares would always be about losing someone i loved, which were actually quite common, and unfortunately often quite accurate.

I seriously didn't expect the original ending at all...Whether or not George Romero intended to, he really visualized some mitigated feelings of the decade. And jeez, there have been a lot of remakes: at least two colorized versions, one new version with a new cast (and redone characters), and some other versions I don't remember. Have any of you guys watched any of those or any of the other installments in the series (there are four or five by the original director, a whole spinoff series/mockery by his co-writer or someone, and some other tributes, non-canon installments made by all sorts of people). I watch very few horror films, so I think I lucked out by getting to see the one that effectively paved the way for many that we're familiar with today...

The big thing I liked about the Living Dead remake I saw: Barbara gradually becomes a badass zombie killer instead of being useless and dying, and she survives to shoot the asshole guy in the head. It wasn't nearly as frustrating as the original, but it lost a lot of its social commentary.

I'm sure the reason they revamped Barbara was due to the backlash Romero and co received from feminists and the like. Or perhaps they were inspired by Sigourney Weaver's character from the Alien series. I dunno though. Either way, Barbara was so pathetic in the original that it became laughable. I mean, everyone cheered when Ben slapped her across the face. Everyone. By the way, which one did you see, D? Night of the Living Dead 3D or the 1990 version?

It was just a bland "horror" film. Justin Long's performance was pretty terrible too, which might skew my thoughts. I rarely remember my dreams, I had a few as a kid but never any recurring ones. I do remember being shot in many dreams however. Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Instead of some rednecks shooting a totally normal Ben at the end of the movie, Barbara goes back to the house, shoots the asshole guy who is normal and says he is a zombie just to get back at him for being such an asshole. Then she finds Ben in the basement as a zombie and puts him down. There's still the idea that humanity as a whole is kind of not worth saving in how they enjoy shooting zombies and torturing them and so forth at the end, though. Romero has a few ideas I don't really agree with, though, like in Diary of the Dead, he has the female lead say something like "the more voices there are, the more spin there is. A 1000 different versions of the same facts, who could tell what was the truth anymore?" I don't agree with this at all. I don't think a monopoly of information from two or three new sources is at all superior to 1000 conflicting voices. Plus he contradicts himself in the same exact film by having the truth about zombies come from Youtubers while lies and propaganda are spread by the main news outlets. Make up your mind, Romero, don't just bitch about blogs and youtube videos while at the same time thumbing your nose at Big Media. -------------------------------------------------------------- Emily, a crowd has gathered here And once again they fail to see. Being subtle is the way to go. The reason that Night of the Living Dead has garnered so much respect by film scholars is due to its combination of imagery and messages coinciding with the social climate of the era. Seeing a black man get shot to death by a group of mob-rule vigilantes carries so many messages, especially when it parallels or reminds us of the deaths of MLK and Malcolm X. Saying that the media lies by saying the media lies is just asinine.
